Trapped in a Lift? What to Do and What Not to Do

Being stuck in a lift is frightening but rarely dangerous. Here's how to stay safe, and what building managers should do.

Lift entrapments are stressful, but modern lifts are designed with multiple safety systems to protect passengers. Knowing what to do helps everyone stay calm and safe until help arrives.

If you are trapped

  • Stay calm. Lift cars are ventilated, so you will not run out of air.
  • Press and hold the alarm button. Most lifts have a two-way communication system connecting you to someone who can send help.
  • If you have a mobile signal, you can also call the building manager or the number displayed in the lift.
  • Tell the person you speak to where you are, how many people are in the lift, and whether anyone is unwell.
  • Wait for trained help. The lift will not fall; it is held by several independent safety devices.

What not to do

  • Do not try to force the doors open.
  • Do not try to climb out through a hatch or gap, even if the lift is close to a floor.
  • Do not jump or rock the lift car.

Most injuries during entrapments happen when people try to get themselves out. Staying inside the car until a trained person releases you is always the safest option.

For building managers

Only trained and authorised people should release trapped passengers. Keep your lift company's emergency number clearly displayed, make sure the alarm system is tested regularly, and never attempt a release yourself unless you have been properly trained. If anyone is injured or unwell, call 999 straight away.

Our breakdown line is open 24 hours a day for entrapments and emergencies.
